The gulf

The Gulf is a novel written by Anna Spargo-Ryan. The typeface is handwritten by the cover designer Emily O'Neil. She explains through a blog post on ABDA (Australian book designers Association) that she had all creative power from the book author, Anna. This is a serif font with a crayon child like type.

It is an exciting but also daunting cover because of the deep blue. The audience of this book is for a mature audience and it carries heavy themes such as domestic violence, family breakdowns, drug abuse and etc. It is about about a sixteen year old girl trying to grow up in an unfortunate environment. Kind of like taping together her adulthood, hence the cover.

What takes awhile to see is that this is a vertical beach. Only after researching the designers notes did I realize that. On the bottom left you see two dots that represent two people walking. The layout is very unique and artistic. The cover also carries a lot of symbolism in regard to the books content and this is something to think about in my future projects.
