René Richard
Hughes De Jouvancourt
The book I chose is by Hughes De Jouvancourt published in 1978. I will only be analyzing the spine of this book because it was located in a closed off section of the BanQ in their archives. The spine caught my eye instantly because of the material used on the cover. It features a textile pattern and resembles that of an antique couch.
The typeface is a transitional serif, LTC Kennerley small caps. There wasn't much information about the book available online, but Jouvancourt was an author and artist who mostly wrote artist books. Knowing that René Richard was an artist, we have to think that the designer intently chose the fabric, colours and typeface to suit the artist. As we can see next to it, there's another artist book by the same author with a different typeface and pattern. This establishes a sense of a series while maintaining individuality.
This will carry out into my own work as I continue to create book designs that function with cohesion and can stand strong on their own.
