Julie Doucet's Grotesque Femme figures and Pink Newspaper
Visiting the BANQ to see the artist book collection was a very fun look at the different forms artist books can take. The one piece that I loved was by a cartoonist Julie Doucet because it was an illustrated book on died pink newspaper. She took an already existing piece of print and altered it to incorporate her own illustrations of mostly the grotesque femme figures, which I love!
There is no font or typography by the artist herself, but her illustrations sit on a repurposed italian newspaper that uses a modern font, with larger typeset for the title, and smaller columns arranged in a grid format.
The figures seem to be in conversation with the newspaper, as the first image shows sporty figures juxtaposed with a sports page in the newspaper. The second image is a woman infront of a car crying, which is a nice subversion to the traditionally beautiful femme model.
Also I was so interested in seeing the older books and their exposed stems because I just watched this series with a friend that shows traditional irish bookbinding and the extensive processes that go into binding these books. Watch here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBd67qQy96k
