Given Names
The typeface used for the title “Given Names” is a sans serif typeface that appears to look a bit like Tiresias. Due to the manipulation, it is difficult to confirm the typeface. The sub title “Blood Secrets” is Hercules Text Italic which is a serif typeface.
This is a vinyl album cover for the band Given Names’ debut EP "Blood Secrets". The targeted audience are for those who are interested in new indie music with alternative sounds.
The typography enhances the communicated message in a very interesting manner through the manipulation of the typeface. The use of liquifying the text gives off a rigid and industrial overall look to the album cover which I find suits Given Names’ music perfectly. Despite the harshness of the type, the general layout is very simple and clean which is a pleasant contrast to the type. The band name shifting to the side while the album title remains in the center is another unique attribute that I believe adds flavour to the entire album artwork.
This example of manipulated typography and layout will help influence me to try something different and daring in my work. I tend to keep my work somewhat simple, especially the typeface. This example showed me that it is possible to design something that is clean but also eccentric and out of the ordinary.
