Faire Naître
The typeface used for the sub title “Elle Seule” is Polymer Medium Caps which is a sans serif typeface. The rest of the text is a version of Polymer Book Roman which is a sans serif typeface as well.
This is a page excerpt from the historical perspective artists’ book “Faire Naître” by Roland Giguere and Albert Dumouchel. This book consists on many poems that all share the same thematic theme of love. The targeted audience for this book could be people who enjoy reading poetry but I find it is more targeted to people who are interested in typography especially typography that is out of the ordinary.
At first glance, the visual order of the type is what grabs my attention specifically in the typography. The sub title appears to be floating and is positioned in a unique manner hence not in the middle. I find the use of positioning the words “Elle Seule” apart from each other is some type of visual metaphor in regards to the text it self. I believe that graphic presentations like these grab the attention of the reader especially with the words that are bolded or even positioned backwards which was found on other pages. Despite the “odd” placements of texts, the overall layout still appears to be extremely clear and organized which allows the overall reading experience to be enjoyable.
This example of book typography and layout will help influence my own creative work by allowing myself to create something different but still keeping everything in order. It is important to design a book that is easy to read but that also has its own special touch. Using typography and layout to tell a story is crucial in order to have a powerful and dynamic message told.
