Book Conservation

Coming to the BANQ and seeing the many different processes related to all different types of print and typography was very interesting and eyeopening. I found that there were many processes that were far more extensive than I realized such as the stamping plate with all the different letters and how that came together.

Before coming to the BANQ I did not know anything about book conservation. I found it really interesting that they had such a variety of books and documents which they conserved there and the different climates the papers needed in order to be kept in the best shape. Seeing some of the very old books in the colder rooms was very interesting as they were extremely traditional, which contrasts many of the books we looked at in detail later in our trip. I definitely learned a lot about book conservation, and particularly found it interesting that there were an array of different procedures for restoring different paper or books in case of an emergency. Before visiting the BANQ I overlooked how important of a process book conservation is and how difficult it is to keep these aging and important documents in great shape.
