TIQUE | art paper

The «Tique | art paper» magazine is one of my favorite publications because of its wonderful layout and typography. It is a publication of contemporary art. The sans serif font is «La Nord» by the German designer Raoul Gottschling. This font is one of my absolute favorite fonts. The typeface embodies geometric appearance with humanistic style. Other fonts that are used are the «GT Sectra», a postmodern serif font, and «Mono Space».The mélange of the three works very well.

In this publication/magazine, the grid (and by that I mean its structure and inflection) takes the layout to a new level. The clear hierarchy helps reading. «Invisible» connections are visible. In interviews, the questions are indented with the first line of the answer. The magazine spread is used optimally—the margins are very narrow. The white space creates an interesting dynamic. The headlines, subheadlines, text and white space create a symbiosis. I cannot really tell how many columns are used because of its flexible use.

This example will influence my creative work because fonts have been mixed courageously. I always find myself in overthinking my font choices. Also, the white space is used generously. It seems like the text and the layout are alive and they can «breath». If had had to write down two rules for me: «Stop overthink the font choice. Chose some, use/try them, print them. judge.» and «Let the text breath, because the text needs to be alive to be read.»
