Thrasher

The classic Thrasher magazine. In my opinion the coolest skate mag to still exist today. The mag has been consistent with their font since the 70's. Every issue cover has had a skater jump into the title, yet leave it visible. This is their trademark. It makes the viewer appeal to the cover because you feel the movement of the athlete in front of you, including the epicness of their tricks.
We have all seen this font be overused in the last 3-4 years. Public figures such as Kanye West and Justin Bieber have ripped off the font in their band merch. Artist like Rihanna have posted selfies in the flaming merch and it went downhill from there. It's an awesome font, don't me wrong. It has just lost it's real powers. You can find versions of the font everywhere on the internet, you can write whatever you want. For example, one of them is Banco font.
It was not meant to be for the mainstream pop crowds. Social media has ripped off the true meaning of this magazine. Most people wearing thrasher or thrasher inspired clothing don't even own a magazine or have never opened one.

So let's take a look at how cool their editors are. They use unconventional grids, meaning the're crooked or popping out or uncentered etc. They have always had a chaotic theme and it works perfectly for the subject of skateboarding. When I first opened one of their issues back in 2014, I vividly remember reading every single detail on the pages. The use of colors and addition of mixed mediums like photography and graphic design is captivating. I was so intrigued by this style. Their is so much detail to pay attention to. Yet everything has so much unity, every page is so well thought out.

This style has always inspired me to go outside the box. I think as an artist you can create whatever you want but your message has to be clear. They are the perfect example of flavoured organization, the pages are fun, easy to read and attractive.
