Universal Principles of Design - Rockport

This spread's design is an example of cold typography - Clinical, light and monotone.

Different shades of grey are used for the header, sub header and body text. It appears the layout is done on 3 columns with large margins, giving a sense of isolation to the text block. The illustration on the right-hand side is done in a similar look and feel. The blue trim of the hardcover also lends a sense of coldness.

The typeface used is a sans-serif and looks similar to Univers.
The headers are set at 27 points.
The subheaders are set at 12/13.
The main body text is set 9/12. Captions are set the same size but a lighter shade of grey.
Footnotes are set at 7/11.

After studying this example, my biggest take-away is how the use of large whitespace around a text block can be used to convey a sense of precision or coldness.
