The Monster Book of Monsters

The Monster Book of Monsters is a fictional book in the Harry Potter universe. According to this website that sells prop replicas, the book has dimensions of 9.25”x 12”, which seems accurate when shown next to Harry’s hand. The title is center justified and set in a handwritten font. The title is in two different sizes, with “The monster book of” set in approximately 72 points and “Monsters” set in approximately 100 points. There is no other text on the cover.

The book has a hard cover. It has a jacket, which is not only made of leather, but also fur. The book looks like an animal, with the edges of the jacket extruding outwards to form legs. It has the beady eyes of a spider, and vicious-looking teeth. Intended for high school students, this book will attack its reader with its teeth when opened. Funnily, the only way to tame this book is to stroke its “spine” in hopes it calms down.

I think this is a good example of a book cover that reflects the contents of the book itself. Thanks to its unique design and the success of the Harry Potter franchise, I think it’s not far fetched to believe it is one of the most famous and iconic fictional books. Although not very practical, I think it is a good example of speculative design. In regard to our own world, this book show us the possibilities of integrating technology in book design.
