The Link, Volume 34 Issue 9

The object is a student magazine published at Concordia on a regular basis, monthly usually and can be found throughout the campus distributed for free to students, also many students can also contribute to the magazine and find their own work in there from articles, to graphics and photos. The majority of the text is featured in a classic Times New Roman serif typeface unless it's an advertisement or not apart of the body text and headings. The font choice was good for the purpose of the long printed text, serifs are easier to read in print especially with large pieces of body text. The layout is placed in three columns and upon inspection of other pages, there could be a twelve column layout, but the majority of the pages are split up in three columns and other elements are sized almost randomly if outside of the standard three columns set up, which allows for some creativity while not always following the grid, but also providing some unity by using three columns for the majority of all body text in the magazine creating it's own sense of structure and inflection, while allowing some elements to exist outside of it. All of this combined helps to enhance the message, allowing the text to be easily read and followed while having some things out of place allow for some variety and pulls the reader's attention towards the thing that might be slightly out of place.

This example of structure and inflection will help influence the work that I produce reminding me that it is good to follow a grid to display large body text allowing for easy to follow reading, but also allowing for some variety to break out of the grid to show some flavour and diversity to element placement, literally working outside of the box/grid.
