The New Yorker magazine

I chose this edition because it was the latest and not because it was different, since all new yorkers have the same structure and use it generally the same way.

The New Yorker website uses their custom signature typeface Irvin for headlines. This was designed by Rea Irvin specifically for the magazine back in the 1920s. (The version now in use was redrawn by Ben Kiel and House Industries.) It’s not available for public use, so there have been many attempts to mimic the typeface over the years, including Gert Wiescher’s New Yorker Plus, but they aren’t great. For text and labels the website uses Adobe Caslon and Neutraface, reflecting (but not replicating) the custom Caslon and Vogue used for many years in the printed magazine.

The grid is simple, I would guess 3 or 6 because most of the text parts are in 3 columns but other pages which are mostly pictures are more free in the space and it's less clear. I love the simplicity of the layout and to see how it can be used to achieve many things, i was thinking that the more columns you have, the better it is in the freedom of building the layout, but I'm realizing that's not actually it.  You can work with minimum amount of columns and rows in your grid and still achieve great things. The only thing i "dislike" about this layout is the really thin margins, it feels very condensed and "stressed" in some way.

I was having a hard time using 10 or so columns, and was forcing myself to work with this because I was thinking it was better, but it showed me that i can work with 2-3-4 columns and still achieve great results. That's how it will affect my personal projects.
