L'Organe #COLDTYPE
 |
December 2018 issue |
- Typeface classification: sans serifs, no contrast, vertical stress. Transitional sans-serifs.
- The object is the francophone magazine of Concordia, L'Organe, which features texts and stories from students. The audience of this object are students of Concordia and Montreal at large. It is a free magazine offered in many locations throughout campus.
- The type is bold and relatively large (14pt). The alignment is different for every poem or story, which keeps the reader on their feet. The font seems stiff and frigid to me, hence “cold.” The alignment on this specific page is justified with the last line left-aligned. This further contributes to this impression of #coldtype as its straight, rectangular text block feels more impersonal and factual, like a textbook, not a personal poem or novel. The combination of the type which has a block-like appearance, the justified text block with small margins and the large size of the text give me the impression of cold type.
- For my own work, I will be aware of what 14pt looks like in real life. I tend to find the size of the type interferes with the message, and the margins are too slim for my liking.
