Gavin Edwards, Last Night At The Viper Room

The typeface used for the title of the book is Superbastone Bold Small Caps which is a sans serif typeface. The sub title “River Phoenix and The Hollywood he Left Behind” is Canterbury Sans RR Bold which is a sans serif typeface as well.

This is a biography and autobiography book written by the author and journalist Gavin Edwards. This book recounts the life and tragic death of acclaimed actor River Phoenix. The audience that this book is targeted for are readers who are interested in this life and career of River Phoenix.

The typography of this book cover enhances the communication message strongly in the sense that the type is very bold and takes over most of the space. The boldness of the title is very powerful in my opinion because the content in the book is quite striking as well. The use of putting River Phoenix’s name a different colour than the rest of the text specifically yellow is very dynamic because not only does it highlight the topic of the book but River Phoenix was known as a very influential and bright young man. Therefore, I believe the use of the yellow font colour was potent in this font choice. The layout on the cover page is also very interesting. I personally enjoy the simplicity of it. That being said, the text being positioned to the left of the cover page allows for a very pleasant and transparent overall appearance.

This example of a cover page will help influence my own creative work by understanding what kind of book contents I am working with. I have noticed that the cover pages of novels, fiction, non-fiction, autobiographies, poems, etc all display a different kind of layout. Autobiographies for example appear to be a lot more simplistic. This will allow me to really take into consideration the contents of the book that I am creating a cover for and allowing the contents to be displayed firmly.
