Ender's Game
A Tor Book
Published by Tom Doherty Associates, Inc.
The typeface used for the cover of Ender's Game appears to be a custom font that is a small caps sans serif font. Some but not all of the inner curves are bracketed., and the letters are wrapped around the shape of the planet on the cover. The letters have a white outline and a drop shadow.
Ender's Game is a science fiction novel written in 1977. This edition of the book was published in 1994. The audience of this book would be young adults and adults interested in science fiction literature.
The typography used on this cover us used to set the tone of the book. I believe that the typeface seeks to look futuristic. The word game is on an angle and getting smaller, creating a movement that makes it look like its stretching into the future. Furthermore, there is a strange combination of hard edges and curved lines, which is characteristic of many sci-fi fonts, for example the back to the future font.
This will influence my work in the future by exemplifying the importance of association within a genre. There are many tropes and similarities within specific genres such as science fiction that make a typeface identifiable to that genre. This helps the reader or audience make that connection quickly and gives them information about the book without any reading or explanation.
