Calvino's If on a winter's night...

If On a Winter's Night a Traveler by Calvino, an Italian novelist, is the book cover I have chosen. The font of the book title and writer's name was hard to find due the multiple editions of the book and the lack of a colophon. However, if I were to guess I would say it closely resembles a mixture of Sigmund Freud and Bombshell Pro. Two fonts commonly use for wedding invitations I learnt upon further inspection.
The typeface chosen is perfect for the novel because of its organic, handwritten structure. The reader of this book becomes fully immersed in the second half because the reader (you) is being written about as if welcomed into the narrative of the first half of the novel. Thus having an organic typeface is fitting because it is as though you are reading something personalized and written by hand--like a diary.
The image on the book cover is of a book, again very in line with the story's meta plot line. The illustration is not exact and looks as though it was hand drawn. The illustration is has a silver leaf finish on it creating a luminous effect. This silver finish may just be used as a way to catch the attention of a potential reader while keeping the cover simple.

I think this will influence my own work because I am interested in having texture play a big role in my book covers because I enjoy the subtle charm it can bring to an otherwise simple cover design. Also, having a typeface that is interesting but alludes to the novel's content is something I would like to practice in my cover designing.
