"The Canadian Modern Language Review Issue 73, 2017" is a book about the way languages are working in Canada between all of its citizens and how it's ever changing and evolving. Targeted towards those interested in learning more about how diverse in terms of languages Canada is. It's also bilingual in English and French in the same book. Also one of the first books I took off the library shelf to inspect.
The typeface used was a Serif regular, unable to determine exactly which font it was because the colophon wasn't present in this book, but according to a font identifier, it could possibly be "Deca Serif New Bold", or perhaps "Stratford SH Regular". But quite possibly, it could simply be "Times New Roman". The font choice was a standard choice for a book in print. Studies have shown that it's easier to read print with a Serif font because of the way the letters help the reader's eyes flow from one word to the next making it easier and less strain on the reader's eyes. The layout is also pretty basic, where new paragraphs are separated by the use of an indent and occasional headers for new topics but otherwise, the text isn't separated any further with white spaces to allow for as much information to be on the page for the reader to comfortably digest the words and to continue reading seamlessly as apart of the "crystal goblet" ideology.
This example is a good influence on my own creative work, showcasing the basics of simple but to the point and effective font choice and layout. Nothing to distract the reader, and effective use of page space to get the information across without losing the reader and spacing paragraphs too far apart with unnecessary white space breaks. I enjoy doing this for my own work where I believe in the basics, simple, to the point and effective design.
