This page spread is from National Geographic's May 2012 issue. National Geographic's content is educational and addresses topics, such as, geography, natural science, environmental conservation, and world culture.
The article addresses the issue of the alarming pace of the decreasing population of koalas in Australia due to the urbanization of this species' habitat. This article's aim is to raise awareness on the dangers of urbanization on its initial ecosystem, and the consequences it can bring to an entire species that is native to Australia.
What I've learned from observing this spread was that it is possible to use both serif and sans serif types in a spread without it looking too overwhelming, or unpleasing to the eye. The use of colours on the type is also interesting and doesn't disturb the visual aesthetics of the page. It is also interesting how the textblock is structured within the pages, but the image extends all the way to the edges of the page, which makes it stand out on the page.
