hero of time

The example of a grid in use I've chosen is from a poster that depicts the legend of the hero of time from the popular video game series "The Legend of Zelda". It depicts the legend of which the protagonist of the game is chosen and the history behind the character as it is presented at the beginning of every game and it is targeted to fans of the video game series.

The typeface used is a serif font similar to a Modern serif with oblique stress and high contrast.

The typography depicts a clear and legible chronology and hierarchy of importance. From the overall appearance, we get that this story is old, perhaps ancient. The text is separated by images, but rather than confuse and distract the reader, they clarify and lead the eyes to the next portion of the text. The text is fully justified in each section of the grid used. The hierarchy of importance is shown through the emphasis of some phrases like "THE HERO OF TIME" and "THE HERO OF LEGEND". Although the whole text is capitalized, hierarchy is shown through text size to show the reader the most important parts of the tale.

The grid takes up the whole poster. The margins and empty spaces are filled with glyphs to reduce the amount of white space that doesn't properly adhere to the grid. The grid seems to mostly be made up of two columns, broken twice by long horizontal rectangles that still adhere to the grid. Each text block seems to be accompanied by an image of a corresponding size.

This will influence my work because it taught me that a text is as much seen as it is read and that imagery will know cut the flow of the reading, but can also enhance the reading and guide the eyes. It also taught me that hierarchy of information can be shown through emphasis and font size. I especially like the use of long horizontal imagery to break the text.
