Kinfolk Vol.18
Kinfolk Vol.18 Magazine is a publication surrounding lifestyle. Targeted towards those who are interested in improving one's quality of life and this volume specifically includes articles on design, home, and city life. The magazine typically involves a mixture of large images that can take up an entire page or even span across two pages, otherwise filled with text. The typeface used is "Adobe Caslon", which is a Serif font, that is used throughout as the body text, where it's main attributes are a healthy use of whitespace and letterspacing. The typeface used for the logo and any Kinfolk branding is "Optimus Princepes", which is also a Serif font, in CAPS. The font choice for the body text, "Adobe Caslon", is a gorgeous font that allows the reader to read across the page with ease because of its Serif characteristics. The font specifically allows for more whitespace and letter space that makes the text breathe and not feel too crowded when there is a lot of text. The layout is a clean modern grid that has the same inside and outside margins, and the top and bottom ones are also very similar to each other creating uniformity with the grid. Everything is aligned with one another, the top body quotes are aligned and the body text aligns with each other where they start and finish in the same spots, which creates uniformity throughout all of the magazines. On all of the pages, they keep the top and bottom margin's the same and as clean as possible with just the page number and sometimes the title, even if the page is filled with a picture, it keeps the same grid layout. All of this together helps communicate their message in a clean, easy to read, get lost in reading, kind of way. This magazine's layout can help influence a lot of my work because of how it maintains a lot of text on a page all the while allowing for whitespace so that the text can still breathe. The pictures on the other pages also span either across both pages, or fill an entire page, or even take up a whole page and part of the next, really trying to give the pictures a voice and space it needs to truly be appreciated. I love photography and always want to try to give my photos a chance to shine and have it's own space to be seen.
