Bad vs. Good
I think it is pretty fascinating, that even "bad typography" can have something really interesting. This is a very good example of a "bad typography" – but in the same way, it is kind of good. I found this poster close to «Place des Arts» on my hunt.
It is a poster advertising a musical event. The target audience is a rather young audience, from 18 to 25, who has an interest in Korean pop music. The design is young and immediately captivates with eye-catching colors. A poster should attract attention – and this poster definitely does.
The lettering K-pop can be seen in triplicate. Mirrored in the middle, it is overlaid by a magenta-colored circle, and thus the legibility of the title fades into the background. The header and footer provide more information about the event, but the blackletter font makes it increasingly difficult to read. Typography should draw and relinquish attention.
According to the DIN 16518 font classification, this is a mixture of a sans serif linear Antiqua (Avenir Next LT Pro Bold Condensed Italic and Avenir Next LT Pro Bold, both by Adrian Frutiger) and a blackletter font (Old London or Cloister Black, both by Dieter Steffmann).
For a party with Korean pop music, the blackletter font is rather inappropriate because it embodies a somber association. Nevertheless, the mixture is very interesting and for a while, the mix works very well.
This typographic mix will affect my future work as it is a well-executed "bad typography". The rules were broken with a certain talent.
