grid typography

This page in DC Comics' Firestorm, The Nuclear Man features an advertisement that utilizes a typographical grid system. The advertisement is from American Comics, who is selling a vast variety of products. A grid system allows the information on each product to be distinguishable from its neighbour using explicit and implicit lines.

Underneath the title resides three rows featuring two, three, and six columns. Each column's subheading is centred, while the comic name is justified left and the price is justified right. As the rows increase in number of columns, so does the gutter size between each column.

I am particularly fascinated by the third row's display of implicit gutters. At least one comic book in each column is boxed in, in order to maintain the clarity between columns.

Although this style of advertising is nearly obsolete nowadays—and understandably so—I think that American Comics utilized it successfully by using a grid system that aids the reader in sorting through a lot of information.
